Carry Distance

The first step is to find your yardages.  Most golf shops or fitters offer services to document your yardages.  These might be referred to as “Gap Analysis”.  Take the numbers they give you and write down your average distance per club.  If you have a launch monitor or device at home that provides accurate data, take the time to go through each of your clubs’ distances.

Everyone’s swing is different.  Some hit further and some go shorter.  Trust the numbers you have been given.  It only works if you put your ego to the side and are honest with yourself. This is the most crucial step in unlocking the full potential of your Approach Advisor.

Wind Matrix

  1. Make sure all of your desired club distances have been entered and determine wind speed using forecasts, weather apps, etc. BEFORE you start your round.
  2. Determine your target distance.
  3. Under the pre-determined wind speed, find your desired distance.
  4. See what stock yardage you should be playing to, to achieve the wind-adjusted distance.
  5. Flip over the card and see what club you should select.
  6. TRUST, COMMIT, AND SWING AWAY – This is the hardest part, but trust your decision. We did the hard work, so you don’t have to over-think.

EXAMPLE:  The wind is blowing 15 MPH at our back and we have 133 yards to the hole.  Under 15 MPH, I see 134 yards as a distance.  I determine that a stock 125-yard shot will go 134 yards with a 15 MPH Tailwind.  I flip over the card and see that my 9 iron is my 125-yard club.  9-iron is the best selection.

Wedge Matrix

It doesn’t matter how many wedges you have.  What DOES matter is that you know how far each one goes with different swing types.  The goal is to have up to four (4) wedges and know how far they go when you take a half-swing, three-quarter swing and a full swing.

Visit a golf shop, fitter, or coach to help you gather your data.  If you have a launch monitor or device at home that provides accurate data, this works too.  About 5-10 swings per club, per swing type (half, three-quarter, full).  You should now have up to 12 new distances for those short approach shots.

Write down your data and be the envy of your group around the greens.
